Am I eligible to receive treatment for a work injury?
You may be eligible for treatment if
- Your injury occurred while performing your work duties or
- Your work significantly contributed to the injury or condition.
Do I need to lodge a claim before starting treatment?
You can often receive initial treatment immediately (eg urgent care, GP visit) before a formal claim is lodged.
Ongoing treatment: Most insurers require a lodged claim to approve ongoing therapy or specialist care. Without a claim, coverage is not guaranteed.
Do I need approval from the insurer before attending sessions?
Emergency treatments. Usually no prior approval is needed.
Specialist or ongoing therapy. Most insurers require pre-approval for physiotherapy, surgery, imaging, or specialist visits, Always check with your case manager.
Does workers compensation cover treatment like
- Physiotherapy/Chiropractic: Yes, if it is related to the work injury.
- Psychology /Counselling: Yes, if the injury has caused psychological impact (e.g trauma, stress, anxiety).
- Imaging: (Xray- MRI, CT) Yes, if ordered by a treating doctor to investigate the work injury.
- Surgery: Yes, if medically necessary and related to the work injury.
What if my treatment is not approved?
If your treatment has been declined, you can appeal the decision by firstly, requesting an internal review with the insurer. If this is not successful, you are able to seek a further appeal through the state insurance regulatory authority (SIRA) and engage a legal representative. Costs associated with this process are usually covered by the independent review office (IRO).
How quickly should I report a work injury?
Ideally, immediately or within 24-48 hours. Delays can affect claim approval.
